Coffee conglomerates talk about “From Bean To Cup”, but The Meserani Project is proudly advocating how the pupils at Meserani Secondary School are witnessing how a tiny seed can develop into something that adds nutrition and nourishment to their main meal of the day at the school – “From Seed To Plate” is our proud achievement.

A variety of vegetable seeds were bought from various outlets in Arusha, Tanzania, and handed over to Mr. Miage, Business Studies teacher at the school.

We have installed water harvesting systems throughout the school, with the help of Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club, Virgin Media and Dominic Benton.

Virgin Media/O2 funded the ploughing of a one acre field, and other areas around the school were used for sewing the seeds.

The results have been amazing, and the pupils have taken great pride in what they have produced through their hard efforts.

The pupils are provided with three meals a day, using the kitchens and dining hall provided by The Meserani Project.

Breakfast is always ‘porridge’, lunchtime is beans and maize, but evening meal now includes fresh vegetables and salads – grown by the pupils themselves.
This food producing project, overseen by Diane Swan of The Meserani Project, and Mr. Miage, teacher at the school, not only provides nutrition and nourishment for the pupils, but it also provides them with ‘lessons for life’ – giving them skills that they can take with them into adulthood.
