2017 Trip – 22 July

Polly Dowdle

Yesterday we woke up at 7, which is practically a lie in now. We went to Meserani Chini primary school and met all the kids there, but some had started so late they were as old as us. We were welcomed by a traditional Maasai dance where the students dressed up in Maasai blankets and wore beaded jewelry and headwear while jumping and chanting. While this was happening the younger students were watching so we joined in and made a circle with the children. One young student in particular was really enjoying it and borrowed a headdress from an older student, which I got a picture of because it was really cute.

In the afternoon we went to the market in Arusha where we bartered for objects. I bought a Maasai blanket for dad, a giraffe carving for Ben, an elephant carving for mum, a monochrome elephant scarf for grandma and a necklace for myself. I don’t plan to buy anything expensive elsewhere but I may buy some more small things because I only spent $35 in the market and $5 on food, water, and washing. Getting my clothes washed is about 90 cents so I will get my clothes washed a bit more.

This morning we woke up at 6:20 so we could arrive at Kipok Boarding Secondary school on time. As it was Saturday, there were no lessons so we were shown around the dormitories where four girls sleep on one tiny bunk bed. I was paired with Severina Emanuel who is in form three, which is the second last year of secondary. We helped her write a letter to her sponsors and then we played a game which we won tied with another team. Then we played volleyball and gave them team strips to wear, which they liked. We distributed underwear and pads as well because the girls have very limited access to them, and then I gave Severina a pack of cards. We got along quite well as she liked running and sciences, and we talked a lot about where we both came from.

Miss you x

This morning I woke early had breakfast and set off for Kipok boarding school there were no lessons on today so the girl I was paired with showed me around the school. The dormitories were very cramped as it was four girls per bunk bed. The girl I was paired with was called Baby Loibanguti I then helped her read a letter from her sponsor then helped write one back they then played a game of volleyball which I just watched as I’m terrible we then went back to the camp and sorted out things for tomorrow. Excited for the days to come.

Hi! Today was good; we went to a girls’ boarding school called Kipok. I was paired up with a girl called Nembris who showed me around the school. The rooms were quite clean but cramped. Her English was alright and we understood each other. I gave her my pupil profile and the letter from her sponsor and then I helped her write one back. We played a game and then had a volleyball match, where I sat and cheered for the team moral because I can not play sport. I got a picture with Nembris on the camera, which is lasting and taking some alright shots. We are back at camp now and have sorted out who we are meeting tomorrow; I am paired up with three boys. I am doing well and I am enjoying this amazing experience so thank you folks!

Hi all back home hope you are well. Today we went to an all girl’s boarding school called Kipok. I was paired up with two other girls called Eliza, Husna. We gave them the letters from their sponsors and then helped them write a letter back to them so that it would be written well. We also had our lunch with them which was really good as we could talk more and get to know each other better. I gave them my pupil profile as well so that they could even get to know more about my family and my background. I took some pictures with them so I can show you once I get home. After lunch we played a game called aliens which was really fun then after we had a volley ball match which I attempted to join in with and my team won which was even better considering how bad I played. We are now back at camp and waiting for tea. Love you all lots and hope you are all having fun.

Miss you all so much and can’t wait to see you less than two weeks now.

Lots of love liv xx

We got up at about half 6 today, but we all woke up at 5 because of noisy campers. After breakfast, which was beans on toast with avocado and mango, so delicious, we headed to the trucks to travel to Kipok Secondary Girls Boarding School. I was partnered with a girl called Naini, she was very polite and nice but did not understand English very well so it was quite difficult to talk, we wrote a letter to her sponsor together and then played a game called aliens, the goal is to remember a 6 digit number sequence and a random name, she was very good at remembering the numbers. Then we had lunch with them and played a game of volleyball, we were mixed with a number of the girls from the school, of course our team won. After that we gave them our sport clothes as well as t shirts for the winners of the alien game. We then returned to Snakepark and had the rest of the day off to relax and wait for dinner which was sausage, mash with vegetables, it was delicious as always.

Hi!

Today we went to Kipok girls’ secondary school and it was so good. We got a tour of the school and it was so eye opening. They sleep two to a bed and the toilets were just a hole in the floor. We then helped them write a letter to their sponsor and my student’s English was so impressive! We played a game and had a packed lunch with them. They were all so grateful to have their education and sponsors; it was amazing.

When we got back we went to do some paperwork for the school we’re visiting tomorrow and Sara was sat there! I was so pleased to get to see her and she had come to the Snakepark to ask Peter if she could carry on with her education. I was so upset because she said she was hoping so much to carry on but I knew she didn’t have the grades. It was horrible because there’s nothing you can do but Lisa helped me realize that she’s so lucky to have gone to secondary school. She will have a much better chance at succeeding in what she wants to do, which is being a secretary.

Lisa brought glitter and face glue with her and we took it to the clinic where a few young girls are being treated. We put glitter on their hands and faces and they put it on us. It was a lovely moment and really cheered me up. They absolutely loved it.

I have had an emotional but amazing day and I can’t wait to go to Moita boys’ secondary school tomorrow.

Hope you’re enjoying Majorca. Love you all lots,

Abi xxx

Jambo!

Today we went to Kipok Secondary School for girls. It was amazing! I was paired up with two girls who gave me a tour of the school. They showed me their classrooms and where they slept which were two to a bed in dormitories. The kitchen was literally two giant pans that made porridge. While we were walking round they introduced me to their friends who kept testing me with science questions to check that I was smart- and I got them all right! J I had some letters from their sponsors which I went through with them and then I helped them to write one back. Their handwriting was so much better than mine! They were so grateful to even be going to secondary, it was heartbreaking. One of the girls was due to be married off after primary, it was only with a help of a sponsor that she was able to go to secondary. Also, we had lunch with them. I had brought a packed lunch and they were given these pancake things. It was horrible just watching them eat that so I gave them the rest of my packed lunch. Then we played a game called Alien with them where we had to look around the school for clues-it was hilarious and the girls really got into it. We also gave out prizes; I gave the football to one of my girls who were part of the school football team. I got a special hug and everything! When we got back to camp we had a chill night which was lovely because we were all exhausted!

Love you all, see ya soon! X

Jambo,

Yesterday we visited Meserani Chini. The school was fun of a lot of cheeky children egar to attract your attention. They messed around with my camera pressing all the buttons…I had some finger marks on my lens! The children preformed a ritual dance which was great fun and lovely to see their pride in their community. The smaller children caught my attention as they joined in on the sidelines, one young boy wearing the fallen jewelry headband of another. His face made my day. After we attended a local market, I exchanged $15 into Tanzanian shillings 30,000 I soon settled into the way of bargaining and bought a massai blanket I managed to get it from 45,000 to 10,000!! The teachers were very impressed. I also bought some earings for 4,000 which is $2, and got a free present. Today we visited an all girl’s boarding school called Kipok. I was paired up Enithot, a lovely girl that has a story. We gave them the letters from their sponsors and then helped them write a letter back. We finished early so I showed her my pupil profile background she was fascinated with the images. After I showed her the safari photos and we had giggle, she has never seen a chimpanzee! Cant wait to show you the images. After lunch we played a game called aliens which was really fun. Following that we had a volley ball match which I attempted to join in with and my team lost….probably because of me! Lots of love Elodie xxxxx

Hey,

Hope your all ok and I hope your missing me as much as I miss you all!

Today we went to a all girl school called Kipok which we met the children who were sponsored there. I know I keep saying it’s been he best day everyday but today has been the best days so far. We were given the children’s letters of their sponsors and we were paired with the girls. I was paired with two girls called Edina and … which were gorgeous girls. They melted my heart. On a sheet of paper we were given it had their information on and it said on Edinas her father had cancer and she didn’t understand and the she said my father passed away last year and she started crying, as you can imagine I was in floods of tears because these kids have nothing. She was telling me not to cry in the end because I was just crying kissing the face of her. The letters with were given of their sponsors we had to read to them or if they were good at English they could read and we got to help them write a letter back which was interesting because you can see how grateful they’re. I know I keep saying its heart breaking but I feel my heart is broken everyday, they deserve so much better but they’re happy in their own way. It was funny because we had to give the girls bras and sanitary towels. They loved the bras and they wanted all the bright ones bless them. We got to eat with them too but they didn’t eat what we did they had some juice and a japatty. So I gave them most of my pack lunch as I couldn’t not. They were telling me to eat but I enjoyed seeing them eat and it was different to what they were used to. Later on in the day we had a game of volley ball but my team lost but it was just lovely seeing them smile and enjoy them self being care free.

We came back to camp and sorted the letter out for the all boy school tomorrow and ive had a shower and just winding down and were off the bar.

I love everyone so much! Miss you. G xxx

So today we went to Kipok which is an all girls secondary school where the Meserani Project sponsors quite a lot of students. All the girls we met were really lovely but I was paired with Glory. She was so so friendly and she was only in form 2 but her English was amazing, which made her amusement at my lack of Swahili justified haha, she tried to teach me 1 to 10 and I couldn’t even get all of that right. First she took me on a tour around the school; the Physics lab was very basic but it had all the essentials mine does (gas taps, sinks etc.). The dorms were very crowded and Glory was in one of the larger ones. Each bed is a bunk bed, she was on the top bunk which she also has to share with another girl in one single bed,she still loved posing for a photo with it though! After the tour of the rest of the school and getting to know the incredible Glory, we sat down with them to give them the letters from their sponsors and help them right a letter back. It was really heartwarming, her sponsors had sent her a fantastic letter as well as a Whitby jet necklace and some leaflets from where they live. She appreciated everything so much and wrote such nice things back in her own letter. Her sponsor was originally from London so I gave her the pack of London cards (thanks for them Grannie and Grandpa) and taught her how to play snap and she managed to beat me! Next we played a game called Alien with the girls and volleyball (which they were outstandingly good at!). We gave out bras, pads and hoodies from the project which made me really sad to see that they don’t even have any access to what I consider essentials at home without the project’s help. They were all so grateful. It was tough saying goodbye especially to Glory, I hope she does well in her upcoming exams, I have every faith in her she is such an amazing and bright girl and I know that she will do everything she can to make her wish of becoming a teacher come true. Love you all so much and don’t worry about me! Xx

Today we woke up really early and set of in a Mtatu again to Kipok all girls school (I hate the Mtatus) We met up with the girls we were allocated. I had two girls one was called Anna and the other Regina. They both have very different backgrounds but Reginas was heart breaking. I’ll tell you it when I get home. We had a tour of their dometries and it was shocking. They sleep 2 girls to a 1 single mattress. I was shocked because we take beds for granted and they probably cant wait for a morning when they aren’t squished together. Their toilets are literally a toilet seat in the ground meaning they sit on the floor and do their business… I learned that most of the kids love biology and physics when I asked around which shocked me because not many people liked science at AGS.I then helped them read their sponsors letters which were amazing to read and I also helped write a reply. Both Anna and Regina needed help as they didn’t know how to write a response. We talked a lot and I found out that Anna wants to be a teacher and Regina wants to be a doctor. I showed them my pupil profile and they were both very interested when I talked about the cats and when I talked about Sammies job they were very interested. Then we had lunch together and after we played a game called aliens which is a game none of us had played before, then we had a volleyball tournament which we lost but it was fun and defiantly worth it. We then came back to the campsite and had another meeting like the night before to allocate which boys we would be partnered up with. I have 3 with very difficult backgrounds. Now we’re just waiting for dinner, then I’m probably going to be unsociable and stay in my tent and read. I love and miss you all so so so much and cant wait to be back! I’m having an amazing time here, thank you for letting me come. Lots of love steph xx

We visited Kipok Girls’ Boarding School and I met a wonderful girl called Neeko, she gave me a tour of her classrooms, dorms, cafeteria etc. afterwards I helped her understand a letter from her sponsor and then to write a response. We played a game called aliens in which there were pictures of aliens all over the school each with a name and a six digit number and you had to remember both the name and number, Neeko was very good at this and she was very good at this game. I cut my leg but it was all worth it to beat Elodie. The game of volleyball was brilliant and a lot of fun. I gave her the pack of pens and pencils and a bouncy ball and she was so happy. Tomorrow we’re going to Moita Boys’ School. Love you all, Jack

Ameer Ali

Today I got woke up by some people from other campers but I did end up wide awake for a nice warm shower. But today we visited Kipok Girls’ Boarding School and a met a wonderful girl called Dorcas Jackson who is age 17 years old. I learnt a lot of information about her; her farther is a farmer, her brother passed form 4 and her sister is to get married and has a child. Furthermore we gave them their sponsor letters from different people Dorcas sponsor wrote about her family and hoping Dorcas is doing well. Later on we played “alien” which where we had to find many pictures and memorize the number and name then tell one of the teachers and if we got them wrong we would have to go back. After dinner we played a game of mixed volleyball but unfortunately our team lost (thrashed) (15-4). We just arrived back at snake park waiting for our dinner and getting ready for tomorrows big day at Moita Boys’ School.

Love you all, Ameer X

Hey guys I am back again! I have got two days to tell you about as I didn’t have time yesterday so I might be here a while. Our mode of transport was mutatu’s which are basically a tiny mini bus so it was very squished. I will start with yesterday which was our first day visiting a school and we went to Meserani Chini primary school and the kids were absolutely adorable, I loved it! The older kids danced a traditional Masaai dance for us and it was amazing, there was this little kid who was watching and stood dancing the whole time it was adorable. We supplied every student in the school with either a pen or a pencil and they were so grateful and loved having a new pen their faces lit up. The best part of the day was the market it was hilarious we had to barter to try and get cheaper prices and I was awful at it so let Joe do it for me. It was such a good day!! Today was my favourite day so far and we went to Kipok girls boarding school and you will never get who I was partnered up with for the day,,, Joyce Daniel your child you sponsor. She was the most lovely girl that I have ever met and she was grateful for everything that you have done for her. She loved the bracelet and we wrote a letter back to you from her. All day she held my hand and hated leaving go I became so attached I loved her. Next time you send a letter I promised that I would send a letter back to her from me as well. All day she said god bless you and that she loves us. We made sure to get plenty of photos to show you when I am home like their kitchen and their bedroom. Two people share one of the bunks in bunk beds which is crazy but they don’t see the problem with it and are so grateful that they have beds provided. We then played volleyball with them and they were really good, my team won of course!!! We handed over kits to them and they loved them. I didn’t want to leave Joyce she was the most caring person. We ate dinner with them and she offered me a bite of her mango even though we had loads to eat and after their break she brought me a sweet back. She was the cutest. We played a game called alien with them and we were so good at it and worked so well as a team. Me, Lauren and Lisa tap danced for them and they loved it and then we taught they some.

I am missing you all so much, I love you all. I hope you have the best holiday and bring me back lots of presents. Please have a safe flight and see you in two weeks. 😉 Don’t miss me too much and give Tilly a big kiss from me, I need my sidekick back.

Lots of love from,

Izzy xxx

Jambo, today was a fun day as we went to an all girls secondary school and were paired up with a girl to get to know them. Mine was called Fauza and she was so sweet, she was also very smart. They took us on a tour of the school and I found out her favourite subject is science. They sleep two girls to one bed, and it’s a single mattress but she seemed happy about it anyway. It’s her birthday tomorrow so I gave her a pack of playing cards as a gift. I then helped her read her letter from her sponsor and then write one back. She had really good English and I only had to correct a few mistakes. We had lunch with them and then we had to play a game called alien which was really fun. We gave them some presents and then some people played volleyball with them, they were really good. We’re sorting out stuff for the next school tomorrow. I’m feeling a bit tired but still enjoying myself. Sending my love xxx

Today we went to Kipok girl’s school, again by Mtatus. The school itself reminded me a bit of Victorian schools because they had quite traditional desks facing blackboards. We all got paired off with a girl that showed us around the school. The dormitories were quite cramped with two girls to a single mattress which I must admit shocked me because of how spacious even our tents are. Then I helped my partner, Nawahasa, read her sponsor letter and I was meant to help her with her response but she didn’t need me. Then we played Aliens, a game where you memorise odd names and a string of six numbers, which was very tiring because you had to run around the school to find a small piece of paper. Then we played a game of volleyball which was great to watch.

I’ve been saying recently how much I’m enjoying drying dishes by hand because we waft them, as towels are unhygienic, which is a surprisingly good workout. Also, I like washing clothes by hand as well because it saves so much water, especially when the clothes aren’t that dirty. I think I might continue when we get home.

Erin Williams

This morning wasn’t my favourite as the other people camping near us were up at about 4:30 in the morning but then we visited the Kipok girls school which was another amazing experience. I was partnered up with two girls, Ireen and Jenipher. Ireen couldn’t speak much English at all but Jenipher was really helpful and friendly and translated for me when I talked to her. First of all we had a tour which was interesting and it was nice to see how many friends the two girls had at the school as they seemed very happy and comfortable. Then we read the letters they were given together before writing a letter back. They both wrote their letters extremely well – with writing better than mine half the time, then I checked the spellings and the wording for them. We also played a game where they had to remember things which was really satisfying as both girls got really involved with it to the point where I was only saying which group we were and they remembered the 6 numbers and the names by themselves. We then gave all the girls some essentials and hoodies which was really nice as you could see how much they wanted them and seeing them smile is so nice to see. By the end of the visit I didn’t really want to leave as they hugged me goodbye but I have quite a few pictures with them which is nice. Seeing all of this makes me really thankful for everything that I have, especially the opportunity to come here so thank you to everyone that helped.

I’m seeing Onesmo tomorrow so I will give him all of your love and I am planning on writing him a letter from our family tonight and will help him write a letter back which I am really looking forward to. Love and miss you all, Erin x

Just me again, hope your actually reading all these. Ive had such a good day if you were wondering. I hope everyone is well and doing good, I am very good and im having a blast here enjoying every minute of it and I cant thank you enough for allowing me to come on this amazing experience. Today we visited an all girl secondary school called Kipok girls school, that was some experience as all the girls live at the school and don’t go home that often, I was paired off with a young girl called Lucy who spoke very good English and she never stopped smiling. She took me on a tour of the school and showed me where she studies, her bedroom and the dinning hall. Her room is very small and she shares a single bed with two other girls as does everyone else. She has a little metal box with all her belongings inside and she was willing to show me. Before dinner, I gave her a letter off her sponsor and me and lucy wrote a letter back to her sponsor, she was asking questions about everything. I gave her my pupil profile and she made me write my name on the back off the little picture of me and I gave her a pen and pencil. After all this we ate dinner together then we all left the girls so we could get changed for our volleyball match against the school. The people playimg all had different kits on some being a netball kit or football tops, when we got to the place we were playig we mixed the teams up and my team was victorious. Tomorrow we will be visiting the school of boys known as Moita. I have been given the opportunity of spend the day with the sponsor from Miss Grahams form which has made my day as I will take some little bits for him.

Not sure if Nic or mark will see this but I hope they have a safe flight and enjoy there holiday away.

But its time for me to go, speak again soon. Love and miss you all lots

Joe xx

Today we went to Kipok girl’s secondary school, all of us got paired up with either one or two sponsored students. I was partnered with two girls called Maria (age 16, last year of school) and Rahely (aged 16 and in second year of school). We started off the day with the girls giving us a tour of the school, showing us the dormitories, classrooms, eating area and the sports area. They each showed me to their favourite classroom and there beds, it was awful to see that there were 4 girls in one bunk bed and two in one bed. After we had been shown round the school we had a break then took the girls to the dining room and helped the girls read there letters from sponsors and then helped them write one back to there sponsor explaining about themselves and there life. It was amazing to hear what these girls have been through and how well they are doing at school, Maria also had exceptional English, both written and spoken. After we finished the letter we played game called aliens were we had to go round the school and find cards with names and codes on, this lasted about 15- 20 minutes. After running around the school like headless chickens we found out that my group had came first and the two girls had received a price for coming first. To finish of an amazing day we had a game of mixed volleyball between us and the students, the team I was on lost but it was the fun that was important and seeing the smile on the girls faces was great. When we got back to the Snakepark we got straight to the seating area to sort out the letters etc. for the students at the school tomorrow. Even though it was great seeing who I was going to be meeting tomorrow what made me happy was that Abi got a surprise visit from her sponsored pupil who she was never expecting to see again, I was so happy that she got to see her. Now we are just winding down and getting ready for the day ahead tomorrow. Ill keep you updated on the trip and let you know how I am getting on. I am loving being back in this amazing place and the people are incredible. Thank you all for everything.

Love from Joe

P.S. if Kath, Nick or Thomas read this I hope you have a peaceful holiday without Abi there to cause trouble!

Ellie Coulton

Today was brilliant. We went to the first secondary school, a all girls school called Kipok. Each of us was assigned one girl from the school who was sponsored by the Meserani project. I was assigned to a girl named Nekieteto she is a very bright and wonderful girl she was very kind and welcoming. She personally gave me a tour of the school and the school was a lot better than I thought it would look like. It was spacious and they had a lot more facilities than Meserani Chini like better toilets. She was very sociable and answered all the questioned I asked in great detail. She also showed me all her friends, who all gave me lots of hugs- it was so amazing. After the tour we went to the dining room and I helped her write a letter to her sponsor- she was ver good bat writing in English however I did correct a few mistakes. Once we had finished the letter we all went and ate lunch together it was awkward at first but eventually we both warmed up and had a full conversation. After lunch we went outside and played ‘Aliens’. It’s a game where you have to go and run to find cards around the school and remember the aliens name and code and go back and tell a adult the one who remembers the most o0f the cards correctly wins. During the game I tripped and fell I hurt my hip and cut my leg it hurt a little. Sadly me and Nekieteto didn’t win but we had lots of fun playing. After we had a volleyball match but I couldn’t play since I cut my leg and hurt my hip. But I have to say I was a good cheerleader especially when Lisa put glitter on my face. Now that we’re back in camp I am relaxing and about to go to the bar.

Love you lots and miss you all xx Ellie

Eeman Dad

So yesterday we visited the first of the schools – Meserani Chini. It is a primary school approximately 30mins away from the snakepark. We travelled in a “Matattoo”, which is an extremely cramped minibus-style taxi. The ride was bumpy and my excitement to visit the school was overpowered by nausea. I had never been so relived to reach a destination in my life! When we got there, we were greeted by a traditional masai dance, Lisa and I got stuck right in, after a little hesitation. I was initially terrified meeting the children, how to approach them, whether to use the masai handshake if the language barrier would be significant…It all eventually fell into place. They sang their national anthem and then their school song – the pride they displayed towards their country and school was immense and extremely emotional. We handed out pens and pencils to each class and the smile which plastered the childrens’ faces, brought a tear to everyone’s eye. After a day of handing out pencils and prizes for the students who worked the hardest, we engaged in a final dance and presented them with a sports strip.

Later that day we visited the market in Arusha and put our bartering skills to use. I have never felt more obliged to enter a stall than I had yesterday. The same items adorned each stall yet each individual used a different phrase to encourage custom. I bartered and bartered until I was refused items at a discounted price. Peter believed that he could have reduced the price even more, but that is yet to be seen. Overall, the shopping experience was amazing!

Today, we visited Kipok Girls Secondary school. Last night, Peter allocated 1 or 2 sponsored girls out of the 33 to one of us. We were given a letter to give to them. After a day at Meserani Chini, I was expecting the trip to be less challenging and had slightly more confidence as the students were older. However, upon arrival Ruth and Janeth both seemed extremely nervous and scared and had very little English speaking skills. I attempted to make conversation as both girls held my hands guiding me around their school. Initially they answered with yes or no. By the time we reached their dormitory they couldn’t stop talking. I discovered that 2 girls sleep on that bottom bunk and 2 on top. They were extremely confused when my face was plastered with shock. They believed it to be normal. After explaining, my sleeping arrangements at home, the girls became more accepting. Janeth, introduced me to her 2 sisters who also attended the school. Ruth, who had very little English ability, was unable to understand my question e.g. do you have any brothers and sisters?. After the tour, we helped the girls read their letters from their sponsors and then aided them in writing one in return. I discovered that Ruth, who is in form 1 had better English writing skills than Janeth who is in form 2, yet this was reversed when it came to speaking. After, a slight struggle and a bumpy start the girls got stuck right in. They were so happy when their completed letters were read back to them by myself, as they hadn’t expected to be able to reply like they did. I felt s proud knowing that I had helped them. After a sweaty and tiring game of aliens, we ate lunch as we all giggled at my inability to eat a sandwich without making a mess. After a quick lunch, both the Kipok girls and Acklam Grange cohort played a game of volleyball, which lightened the mood entirely. We won of course! The strip which we played in was then handed to the school team. As we all shook hands a sense of pride and fulfilment swept over us. Everyone appeared to be sooo proud. As I hugged the girls goodbye, my heart warmed and I felt a sense of happiness and pride, to have helped them in such a way.

Lots of love, Eeman xx
