Baraka Kalanga
Baraka attended Lesiraa Primary School.
In August 2016 (his final year) he was placed tenth in his school examinations. His father had two wives and his mother has five children (Baraka is the first born). His father used to be a cattle driver, but he was no longer strong enough to work, and passed away in 2023 due to liver disease. Baraka’s mother sells home-made alcohol. His favourite subjects are English, Science, Mathematics and Geography. He prefers to study in his free time rather than play. He would like to be a neuro-surgeon one day.
Baraka started his secondary education at Moita Boys’ Secondary Boarding School in January 2017. He was sponsored by Debbie Fordham.
Baraka sat his national secondary school examinations in November 2020, and the results were published in February 2021. He gained a Division Two, Points 20. This was a really good result, and one that should lead to him being selected to study A’ Levels – this would start in July 2021.
Baraka was selected to study A’ Levels in Chemistry, Biology and Geography, at Nyamunga School, Rorya Mara, and he started his studies in June 2021. He is being sponsored throughout his two years of A’ Level studies by a former student at Nunthorpe Academy, Middlesbrough.
In 2023 Baraka was selected to study a three year B Sc degree course in Food Science at the Open University of Tanzania, Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, but because of the financial situation at home he was not able to start his course. However, in 2024 he was able to start the course due to the sponsorship of Gary and Kay Matthews.
