Meporoo Sumu

Meporoo Sumu

Hilda RentonHilda Renton, an 88-year-old young lady from Eaglescliffe has been knitting our infamous wool slippers since 2007, and is still knocking them out at the same rate of  two pairs a day. Hilda has sponsored Meporoo Sumu to go through four years of secondary school, (he completed his secondary education in 2012 and is now at a Vocational College), and she is currently sponsoring Jackson Sanare through his secondary education. The money that Hilda raises through selling her slippers is used to pay for the education of the boys that she sponsors.

Jackson Sanare

Whilst Hilda gains immense satisfaction from the fact that her efforts have transformed the lives of Meporoo and Jackson, she also says that the challenge of making all these slippers keeps her feeling young at heart, and gives her a sense of purpose in life. It is a wonderful example of how someone of her age can take time to recognise the plight of young people thousands of miles away, and actually so something about it. Well done Hilda -we take our hats off to you!
